International Work

In 2016, I worked for 10 months as a Knight-Mozilla OpenNews fellow at Correctiv in Berlin, Germany. During my fellowship, I analyzed data in R, Pandas and SQL and researched, reported & compiled data for a year-long investigation (in both English/German) into the infrastructure of 13,000 nursing homes throughout Germany. The Investigation prompted discussion nationwide and prompted a change in these evaluations and won the Deutscher Reporter Preis for Innovation in 2016.

Additionally, I wrote about racial profiling and did research on profiling in Germany. During my fellowship, I also published a guide to newsroom on-boarding and off-boarding processes. This e-book was the final product of my research during my fellowship.  I wrote about my experience as a fellow here, as well as my learnings from teaching data best practices, R and Excel at various conferences all over the world. My slides from these talks can be found here.
